The comet assay quantifies genotoxicity in single cells. It uses gel electrophoresis to separate damaged DNA which are then visualized by DNA binding fluorescent probes. Image analysis determines intact DNA (comet head) and fractured DNA (comet tail). The more damage, the greater the proportion of DNA in the tail.
